The PSBMB was formerly known as the Philippine Biochemistry Society (PBS). Governed by an Executive Board of (11) duly elected officers. The PBS was established in August 1973 by a group of biochemistry educators to foster the development of biochemistry in the country.
As contained in its constitution and by-laws, the PSBMB is committed to: upgrade knowledge in biochemistry by encouraging research and education and by establishing communication and exchange of professional knowledge among members as well as with other biochemists abroad, and establish means by which biochemistry could be utilized for the improvement of the socio-economic and health conditions of the country.
The Society’s membership is open to all persons holding at least a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry, chemistry, biology, pharmacy, medicine, and other related disciplines and who are active in teaching and/or research in bio-chemistry and/or related fields.
Since then, the society has sponsored annual conventions, seminars, workshops on concepts / principles, advances, laboratory techniques, teaching techniques, and aids, applications of biochemistry, and molecular biology in different parts of the country. The society’s membership has grown to considerable size with representatives from the academe and research institutions from all over the country.
During the annual convention held on December 2, 1993 at the UP Marine Science Institute, the general membership of PBS voted to change its name to Philippine Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (PSBMB), to emphasize the integration of Molecular Biology as a closely related discipline.
The PSBMB has been a member of the Federation of Asian and Oceanian Biochemists and Molecular Biologists (FAOBMB; formerly FAOB) since 1973. It also represents the Philippines in the International Union of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (IUBMB; formerly IUB).
About the LOGO
The DNA strand in one of the inner circles of the logo emphasizes the integration of molecular biology to biochemistry. The inner circles, radiating outwards and varying in size and border thickness, symbolize the progress achieved by the PSBMB in particular, as well as the advancements in the fields of biochemistry and molecular biology in general.
