Speaker Bionote

Dr. Nonawin Lucob-Agustin is an agricultural scientist specializing in bioengineering science. Her research works include plant genetics, breeding, physiology and epigenetics. She serves as a Senior Science Research Specialist at the Philippine Rice Research Institute, and an Affiliate Professor at Central Luzon State University. Dr. Agustin leads pioneering projects aimed at improving stress (drought, low nutrient, saline) adaptability and productivity of Philippine rice varieties via enhanced root system using mutation genes.

Internationally recognized for her groundbreaking work on L-type lateral root development, her discoveries have significantly advanced global understanding of rice resilience and productivity in abiotically challenged environments.

A former DOST Balik Scientist Fellow (2020–2024), she maintains strong global research ties, serving as a visiting researcher at the International Center for Research and Education in Agriculture at Nagoya University, Japan, in 2023. She holds an M.S. and a Ph.D. in Agricultural Science from Nagoya University—where she also completed the five-year Women Leaders Program to Promote Well-being in Asia—and a B.S. in Agriculture from the University of the Philippines Los Baños.

Her contributions to agricultural science earned her the prestigious 2023 Outstanding Young Scientist Award from the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST), the 2022 Elvira O. Tan Award by DOST-PCAARRD, and the 2024 PhilRice Excellent Performance Award in the Research Category. Beyond her research, she is a dedicated wife and a hands-on mother to three children, aged 5, 2, and 7 months.
